There are many ways to successfully combine heritage style with modern day living, for example, by:
– re-purposing
– re-imagining
– combining traditional techniques with flair.
Here are some examples I personally admire:
RE-PURPOSED
We were contacted by the custodians of this splendid Victorian panelled door following our first ‘Perfectly Frank’ blog; Hidden Treasures in Your Home.
Sadly, to meet modern building regulations, this door needed to be replaced by a fire door and is now surplus to requirements. After a chat with the owners about possible options, we conducted a little research which led to discovering these are Anaglypta door panel designs c. 1900.
These wonderful Roman goddesses have now been re-purposed into magnificent wall art gracing the walls of their Victorian home – and should the owners ever move house, they’ll be able to take the panels with them too.
RE-IMAGINED
Featuring Patience & Gough: Guarding the heritage of heirloom furniture while ushering it into the modern day.
Patience & Gough is a furniture design business that has captured the attention of the UK design industry with its unique approach to sustainability and luxury. The company is owned and run by Alice Patience and Oliver Gough, who started out painting furniture in their home. However, it didn’t take long for the couple to turn their passion into a successful business. We first met Ollie and Alice when we both exhibited at the Cumbria Life Home and Garden Show in 2019. I was stunned by the attention to detail in their remastered pieces of furniture. Ollie, in turn, was intrigued by my Lincrusta creations.
We asked them what inspires their designs. “For us, the answer is simple: we love creating beautiful and functional pieces that bring joy and comfort to people’s lives. Our process begins with a deep understanding of our clients; needs, preferences, and lifestyle. We believe that every piece of furniture should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also functional and tailored to the individual’s needs. We take great pride in creating unique pieces that blend form and function seamlessly,” said Ollie.
COMBINED
Sometimes a decorating project calls for something extra special – combining traditional skills and materials to produce beautiful bespoke décor to suit your personal style and taste.
In the example below, you’ll see another Lincrusta ‘Elizabeth’ ceiling where I was commissioned to create something dramatic in this Victorian apartment. First, re-instating coving and a large ceiling rose, followed by combining the luxurious textures of Lincrusta with gilded gold highlights. I decorated the new ceiling rose and coving to match, creating a real WOW factor – a definite talking point for drinks or dinner parties with friends and family.
